Travel eSIM vs roaming: how UK travellers can compare the real cost

Compare your existing mobile plan with a travel eSIM, including data allowances, calls, compatibility, validity and setup before you go abroad.

A travel eSIM is not automatically cheaper than using your existing mobile plan abroad. Start with what your UK contract already includes, then compare the data and services you need for this particular trip. The best choice should work when you arrive without leaving you guessing about charges or losing access to important messages.

Check your current roaming deal first

Look up your exact destination and tariff with your mobile provider. Ask what is included, whether a daily charge applies, and how data limits, calls and messages work while away. Check every country on a multi-stop itinerary. A plan name or a friend's experience with the same network may not reflect the terms of your own contract.

Ofcom recommends checking charges and available roaming offers before departure. It also highlights bill limits as a way to control spending. Establish how any limit applies to your account and keep the provider's explanation with your travel notes.

Compare equal amounts of useful service

For each option, record the price, data allowance, validity period, covered countries and whether normal voice calls or texts are included. Check hotspot permission if a laptop or another traveller will share your connection. Read any speed restrictions or fair-use conditions instead of relying on an unlimited label.

Use your phone's recent usage as a starting point, then adjust for the trip. Navigation and messaging are a different requirement from frequent video uploads or working remotely. Include the likely cost of extra data if the first bundle runs out. An inexpensive small allowance is not good value if it needs replacing repeatedly.

Confirm the phone and plan are compatible

Check your exact device model and region against the eSIM provider's compatibility list. If you are using another network's service, verify that the phone is unlocked. Apple's international eSIM guide explains this requirement for iPhones and shows where to check the network lock status; other manufacturers provide their own setup guidance.

Find out when the plan's validity starts: purchase, installation, activation or first connection may have different meanings depending on the product. Read the installation instructions before buying. Save access to the provider's help and avoid leaving an unfamiliar setup until you are tired at the arrival airport.

Decide what happens to your UK number

Some travel eSIMs provide data without a conventional phone number. Check how you will receive messages needed for bookings or account access and how you will make any ordinary calls you expect to need. Messaging apps and traditional calls are separate services in this comparison.

On supported phones you may be able to keep your home line and a travel line active together. Apple warns that keeping both lines on can still lead to home-line roaming charges. Choose the intended data line and review switching settings using your device's guidance. Follow the travel provider's instructions about roaming on its own eSIM rather than applying one setting blindly to both lines.

Reduce avoidable usage whichever option you choose

Download useful maps, tickets and entertainment before departure. Review automatic backups and large updates so they do not consume your travel allowance unexpectedly. Ofcom also flags different charging risks near borders and on ferries or cruises, where a phone may connect to a satellite service. Check those situations with your provider separately. After returning, confirm your usual line and data settings are active and review any travel-plan renewal arrangements.

Take this with you

  • Compare your existing tariff before buying a separate travel plan.
  • Check device support, countries, validity and calls as well as data.
  • Review both SIM lines so your UK number does not create unexpected charges.
